To qualify for training as a certified specimen collector for DOT drug testing, you must first meet the minimum qualifications set by the Department of Transportation:

A Screening Test (This can be performed by either a BAT or STT) – When employees come in for testing, they give a breath or saliva sample to show they haven’t been drinking. This first test is called a screening. If they pass the screening test and prove they’re sober, then the employee is good to go. If they fail the test, they must move on to the next step.

Step 2: A Confirmation Test  (This can only be performed by a BAT) – If the employee fails the breath or saliva test, then the DOT requires a confirmation test to be administered after 15 but no later than 30 minutes after the first test. The second test is necessary to prove the accuracy of the first 

You must also undergo refresher training every five years to maintain your DOT breath alcohol technician certification. The renewal training and the initial training are generally the same training.

However, the DOT expects you to stay current with regulations and testing procedure changes between your courses instead of waiting for your refresher course.

Once enrolled:

Certified DOT breath alcohol technicians are certified for 5 years from the original certification date. To remain certified, an individual must retake a certification course.

There are 7 lessons, each containing a video and a short quiz, totally approximately 1 hour. This is followed by an assessment quiz and a proficiency demonstration (mock collections).

Training Includes:

There are 7 video modules equaling approximately 52 minutes. Each video is accompanied by a short quiz. The course also contains a 35-question assessmnet quiz. Finally, the proficiency demonstration (mock collections) takes roughly 90 minutes to complete.

Yes. The course and all its content is available at any time. When you pause your training, the course will keep track of where you left off. Even after completion, you can go back and review the material.

Yes. Your training is valid for one year. All of the material including video modules and documents can be reviewed as much as needed.

Your training certificate will be available to download once we receive the completed ATFs from the mock collections. It can be found in your training portal.
