Our training exceeds the FMCSA core curriculum and covers everything you should know as a medical examiner. This is not necessarily the same as what should be known for the test. These insights were created to help to span the gap.

For each subject, we provide additional points and things to review that you are likely to see on the certification exam.

There are 290 practice test questions and two sample NRCME exams of 120 questions that mirror the questions on the certification test. Each question is accompanied with an explanation.

The questions are specifically constructed to challenge your preparedness and augment your ability to pass the actual certification test.

Your training certificate will be generated immediately upon completion of the course evaluation.

The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) is a Federal program for clinicians who perform physical qualification exams and issue medical certificates for commercial drivers. To be listed on the National Registry, clinicians complete training and testing on FMCSA physical qualification standards and guidance (see FMCSA guidance).

1. Complete NRCME training and download your certificate of completion.

2. Apply for your FMCSA National Registry account and receive your 10-digit Registry number.

3. Wait 24 hours before scheduling your exam. FMCSA’s testing vendors often need up to 24 hours to sync your new Registry number.

4. Schedule the NRCME exam with an approved testing vendor (for example, Prometric or PSI).

5. Bring required items on test day: photo ID, professional license, training certificate, and Registry number.

6. After you pass, you are listed on the National Registry for 10 years, complete FMCSA periodic training at 5 years, and retest for 10-year recertification.

Medical providers eligible to become medical examiners include Doctors of Medicine, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctors of Chiropractic, Advanced Practice Nurses, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Naturopathic Doctors, Doctors of Nursing Practice, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.

In addition, Acupuncturist in Florida; Physical Therapists in Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, North Dakota and Texas; Doctor of Oriental Medicine in New Mexico; and Registered Nurse in Colorado are all eligible to become certified medical examiners

NRCME certification is valid for 10 years from the original certification date. FMCSA requires periodic training at year 5 (provided online at no cost via the National Registry account). In year 9, complete a recertification course and retake the NRCME exam before your certification expires.

One year of access to 11 training modules with in-course knowledge checks, 290 practice questions, two sample NRCME exams, downloadable quick-reference materials, an instant certificate of completion, an Insider Guide on passing the NRCME exam, and a step-by-step certification guide. The course provides 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits, ANCC, ACCME (AANP equivalent), or PACE CE.

There are 9 video modules totaling about 4.5 hours plus two lessons that take about 30 minutes. The course is 100% online and self-paced. Your progress is saved, you have 1-year access, and you can review the videos, documents, practice questions, and sample NRCME exams as many times as needed. Practice exams simulate the 2-hour certification test.

If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the NRCME exam with an approved vendor, potentially as soon as the next day if an appointment is available, and there is no limit on retakes.
